Who are our classes suitable for?

Our 3-week taster course is suitable for complete beginners or those who have made jewellery previously and are looking for a refresher course. The course is a great way to see if you enjoy making jewellery; you can progress to our weekly classes or one day specialist workshops afterwards.

Over the 3 weeks we introduce you to the workshop, tools, equipment and cover health and safety. You will learn a range of traditional jewellery and silversmithing techniques including saw piercing, heating, soldering, forming, texturing, embossing, filing, polishing and finishing.

 

What will you make?

Initially you will experiment with a range of base metals including, aluminium, copper and brass to produce a range of samples and test pieces. You will then make a simple silver ring and several pieces of work building on the processes learned including silver earrings and a pendant.

 

Our jewellery making facilities.

We have a well-equipped traditional jewellery workshop with a good variety of machinery and hand tools. We also have a good selection of specialist tools. Students work at their own individual jewellery bench, we have separate soldering areas and larger communal workbenches.

With guidance from your tutor, you will learn how to size your ring, heat, form, solder and add texture if desired to add individuality. You will then learn how to file, polish and finish your ring to make it comfortable to wear and give a lovely shiny finish to show off.\

Learn how to make a pair of silver earrings at Studio Budgie Galore. This class is a great introduction to working in silver and a chance to see if you enjoy making jewellery\
With guidance from your tutor, you will learn how to saw pierce, texture, emboss, stamp, and file metal. You will begin experimenting creating textures on copper to produce a range of samples before selecting your favourite texture to re-create in silver. Learn how to polish your earrings to give a lovely shiny finish and complete by adding ear fittings to show off your own individual design.\

Silver Earrings

Learn how to make a copper bowl in just one day at Studio Budgie Galore. This class is a great introduction to working in copper sheet to hammer form your own unique bowl.\
With guidance from your tutor, you will learn how to heat metal and form a flat sheet by blocking/sinking using a specialist hammer and sandbag. You will then learn how to form the metal as much or little as you wish to create a bowl that is truly unique. Finally when you reach your desired shape you will learn how to planish the piece to give a lovely even hammered surface.\

Make a Copper Bowl Workshop

Learn a range of traditional jewellery making techniques in this one day silver jewellery workshop at Studio Budgie Galore. This class is a great chance to see if you enjoy making jewellery and you can continue on to the 8 week daytime and evening classes afterwards.

With guidance from your tutor, you will learn how to pierce, form, texture, emboss, hammer, file, polish and finish metal – you will make several test pieces initially that explore how to work with metal before making a piece of jewellery in silver choosing to make either earrings, a pendant or similar decorative object. You will make at least one piece of jewellery to take home.

Beginners Silver Jewellery Day

Learn how to turn old broken jewellery, vintage and found objects into fabulous pieces of jewellery at Studio Budgie Galore. This class is a great way to see if you enjoy jewellery making and is suitable for complete beginners or anyone with previous experience and wants to learn how to add a new dimension to their jewellery pieces.\
With guidance from your tutor, you will learn a range of jewellery techniques including embossing, stamping and using wire to combine with re-cycled jewellery and found objects. Working with beads and wire learn how to create stamped and embossed charms to create fabulous pieces of jewellery including necklaces, pendants and earrings. Learn how to make and add findings to complete and show off your own individual designs.\
All materials including beads, re-cycled jewellery, base metal and wire to complete 2 pieces of jewellery are provided and included in the cost of this workshop – you can bring along any personal bits and pieces that you have to personalise your pieces but this is not essential. Tea, coffee and biscuits are also included.\

Junk to Jewels – Up-cycle, Re-cycle

Learn how to create beautiful pieces of jewellery using Silver Art Clay in this one day silver jewellery workshop at Studio Budgie. Silver Art Clay feels like porcelain clay to work with and when fired turns into fine silver. Fine particles of pure silver are mixed with a non toxic organic binder; when fired the binder burns away leaving a silver piece that can be hallmarked as fine silver.\
With guidance from Helen, you will learn the technical skills required to roll, texture, and cut Silver Art Clay into a beautiful pendant or earrings; you will also learn how to fire, burnish, polish and finish your piece to a high standard. All materials are included in the cost of this workshop, including 10 grams of Silver Art Clay and some fireable cubic zirconia stones.\
Sterling silver jump rings are also included in the cost. Sterling silver necklace chains can be purchased additionally.\

Silver Spinner Ring Workshop

Learn how to make a silver and mixed metal spinner ring in just one day at Studio Budgie Galore. This class is a great introduction to working in silver and a chance to see if you enjoy making jewellery. In this workshop you will create one central wide ring in silver and either one or two smaller rings to go over the central ring and spin around when finished.

With guidance from your tutor, you will learn how to size your rings, heat, form, solder and add texture if desired to add individuality. You will then learn how to file, polish and finish your ring to make it comfortable to wear and give a lovely shiny finish to show off. There will be options to texture the wide ring and the spinning rings to create a truly unique piece.

All materials are included in the cost of this workshop. Tea and coffee are also included. The workshop is fun and informative and no previous experience is needed.\
